Building Planograms

Here we discuss building a planogram from scratch. You can also import another user's planogram, or open one of your own, to use as a starting point. See the fileystem guide for more.

Making a Fixture

First, let's create a fixture to place products on. This can be done in one of three ways.

  • Right click the canvas and select an option from the Add submenu
  • Choose a fixture to add from the Insert menu
  • Drag a fixture from the Fixtures Catalog out onto the canvas

There are three main fixture types, with a few subtypes. Explore them each below.

Bringing in Products

Products can be dragged into your planogram from the catalog. A single product, a selection of several products, or even entire categories can be dragged out.

Once in your display, products can be selected to be dragged, copied, cut, grouped, or deleted. They can be dragged one at a time, or you can drag a selection of products. To do so, click and hold the left mouse button, then drag the purple box around what you want selected.

You may hold Ctrl and click multiple elements to create a custom selection.

Alternatively, you may hold Shift and click on two elements, which will select all products between the top left clicked product and bottom right clicked product.

Products may be moved by dragging the mouse, or by using the arrow keys. Tapping an arrow key will move a product selection in that direction 1" / 1cm. Tapping an arrow key while holding Ctrl will move the selection in that direction by 1/10" / 1mm.

You can right click a displayed product, then choose Product Search to locate the element in the catalog.

GoPlanogram supports Front, Left, Right, Top, and Bottom orientations for elements in your display. To change a product's orientation, right click on it, then select an option from the Orientation submenu.

Additionally, products may be rotated 90 degrees (turned on their side), in conjunction with whatever their current facing orientation is. To rotate a product, right click on it, then select the Rotate 90 option. Clicking this option again will reset rotation.

There are several automatic product layouts available to expedite the process of positioning products, or trying out different product arrangements. These can all be accessed from the command button bar at the top of the application.

All layout buttons in the command bar

To perform a layout, select the products in your display you want to arrange, then click the appropriate button in the command bar.

A much more thorough discussion of layouts can be found here.

Sometimes you'll want to label part of your display, create a placeholder sign, or otherwise explain something to your users via text. GoPlanogram allows you to add Text elements to your POG to accomplish this.

Text elements will not effect reports, nor will they be effected by any active view options or labels.

To create a Text element, you may either right-click, then choose Text from the Add submenu, or use Insert -> Text.

When a new Text element is made, the following menu appears with options to customize its appearance. You may always access this menu again by double-clicking the Text element, or by right clicking and choosing the Properties option.

  1. Text: The text that will be displayed.
  2. Font Size / Font: The size and font family to use for this Text element.
  3. Colors: The color for the text itself, and, if the Background checkbox is checked, the color for the Text background.
  4. Bold, Italic, Selectable and Movable: Checkboxes to determine font styling, and if the Text may be moved / selected.

GoPlanogram also supports the notion of Rulers, which are vertical or horizontal elements of a length you define. They can help measure distance between products in non-standard arrangements.

Like Text elements, they will not be reported, or effected by view options or labels.

To create a Ruler, you may either right-click, then choose Ruler from the Add submenu, or use Insert -> Ruler.

When a new Ruler is made, the following menu appears with options to customize its appearance. You may always access this menu again by double-clicking the Ruler, or by right clicking and choosing the Properties option.

  1. Length: How long the ruler will be. A raw number is in inches / centimeters. You can type things like 4' or 1m, however, and GoPlanogram can parse that into inches / centimeters.
Rulers are resizable in the canvas, so this number really only serves as a starting point. It can always be changed later, either from this menu, or by resizing the ruler.
  2. Selectable and Movable: Determines if the Ruler may be moved / selected.
  3. Vertical: If checked, the Ruler will be vertical. Otherwise, it will be horizontal.

The video below demostrates how one might use a ruler to group 2 products approximately 2' (24") apart from each other.

First, the leftmost product and the Ruler are left aligned (see layouts). Then, the rightmost product is selected, and moved 1 inch at a time (via the right arrow key) until it is approximately lined up with the 24" mark. Then, the two products are Ctrl-clicked to be selected together, then grouped.
